Probably just a matter of poor sampling of the poll or a failure to take enough political races into account.
I mean, you'd have to look at ever race in which an African American was involved to draw any real conclusion. I always see them talking about 3 or 4 different political races that support their conclusion. And with one, Dinkins in NYC, the first time his poll numbers were indeed higher than his actual votes but at his re-election vs Giuliani, the polls were spot on, so that kind of nullifies the whole thing. To answer your first question, the so-called %26quot;Bradley effect%26quot; was circa 1982 and, in fact, polls have shown that Obama's race has actually helped him by 3%, not hurt him. The traditional Bradley effect is estimated at about 2.5% in states that have an 8% or less black population. That is, if you have a smaller black population, there is more %26quot;Bradley effect%26quot;.
Now, one thing to keep in mind is that we don't know how polling has changed since 1982. Are they sampling more blacks this time around? Blacks seem to be voting in much larger numbers for Obama than they would a traditional Democrat. Thus, two observations can be monitored:
1. Which states will individual %26quot;bradley effect%26quot; signs be most likely? If history is any guide, as I mentioned previously it will show up in states with %26lt; 8% black population (e.g. New Hampshire).
2. If Obama's lead is only 2.5 to 3.5% nationally, all bets are off - we are likely to have a LONG night on November 4th.
