How did immigration to America change during the 1800's and what was the response to that change?

can someone explain what this question is asking me to do for a thesis. or what i need to focus on. (it is comparing the old immigrants to the new immigrants in america). old immigrants were from western Europe and were skilled, protestant, and literate. New immigrants were illiterate,unskilled and from various religions.How did immigration to America change during the 1800's and what was the response to that change?The American Indians didn't control immigration and look what happened to them!
