What is with America changing the title of books and movies?

There have been so many books and movies lately that have one title all over the world then a completely different on in the USA (for a bad example; Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (USA)/ Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (rest of the world)). Why? Is it a marketing thing? Is it a language difference? Why does the USA feel the need to alter and change someones work and not leave it as it was originally intended?

Note: when I say the USA I obviously mean the producers and publishers, I'm not trying to generalise here :)What is with America changing the title of books and movies? The American Film and Television Guild is all fully run by the Baptist Church. So all what you see on US movies screen or on television has been totally modified to US Christian standards. Doing this they have to change the original film from where it was distributed and filmed to save legal suits. Outside the US we get to see the whole entire film exactly how they were filmed and distributed. There are a lot of movies we get to see which have been banned in the USA which are only suitable for world wide distribution. US film distributors know if they placed these Christian modified films in world wide distribution they would be all box office flops. The world wide version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone is twelve and a half minutes longer than the US version.
