Before I looked it up earlier, I always thought the characters on Pokemon had those names but they actually have Japanese names that were converted into American names here. Why did they do that? Do these dubbing companies think Americans are too lazy to learn foreign names?

Actually, that's exactly what they think.
But a lot of more recent dubbed anime are more open-minded than that and believe that anime fans are more capable of remembering Asian names.
I highly doubt your cartoon is at any risk of name change. Companies are only worried about covering offensive stuff, so unless your characters' names sound offensive, they shouldn't be censored.Why did America change Pokemon's original character names?I don't know why they changed it, but i like the Japanese names more than the English. You don't see many american adapted animes for kids under 11 with the original names do you?
